Description/Purpose: The
purpose of the McDevitt Diversion project is to install a
low-maintenance water diversion that provides fish passage through the
diversion site at all times and to screen the intake pipe to prevent the
entrainment of juvenile fish. The plan is to replace the existing
1.5-foot high weir, consisting of wood planks installed across the creek
with a boulder weir at the riffle below the existing weir. The proposed
weir will be constructed by rearranging existing boulders within and
adjacent to the channel to concentrate flow through a 3-foot wide gap
between boulders. A new pump passive screed will be installed in the gap
and connect to a 4-inch diameter flexible hose that will convey water
directly to the existing pump. Concentration of flow between the
boulders would increase water depth sufficiently to provide adequate
hydraulic head and sweeping flows at the proposed screen during low-flow
conditions. During high-flow conditions the screen would be moved a few
feet to a location near the left stream bank. The flexible hose would
accommodate the seasonal relocation of the screen in response to changes
in stream discharge. he existing diversion and pumping facilities are in poor condition and require annual maintenance/repair. The weir precludes upstream fish passage during the irrigation season. The goal of this project is to install a low-maintenance water diversion that provides fish passage at all times and to screen the intake pipe to prevent the entrainment of juvenile fish. The
McDevitt Diversion Project was completed in August 2006. The new system
was tested for several days and was successful at even low stream flows.
